Arctic Monkeys drummer for new band

Arctic Monkeys' Matt Helders is working under a new name, thanks to P Diddy. The American rapper says he "didn't want to fuck up [Matt's] image" when they played together recently, and so bestowed upon him a new alias, Rufus Black. Black – not Helders – is a member of Diddy's new band, Dirty Money.

"I didn't wanna fuck up the great thing [Matt's] got going on," Diddy explained to Contact Music. "[He] is down with my Dirty Money crew, [but] whenever he's playing with us, he's Rufus Black." Helders first appeared with Dirty Money in June on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross. Led by Diddy, the group has little in common with Arctic Monkeys: there are no wiry guitars, Sheffield accents or, er, chart-topping singles. Instead, Helders has to follow the beat of a different drum (sorry!), accompanying straight-up contemporary hip-hop.

"It is so strange that me and him are friends," Diddy said. "Arctic Monkeys are so cool, you know? And people look at me as cool maybe as a person, but I don't know if musically they look at me as the underground cool rock'n'roll thing." That's right, Diddy – they don't. "[So] I didn't wanna even call [Matt] by his real name."

While Diddy has yet to record with Helders, he is keen to have the English drummer in the studio. "As a drummer he's definitely one of the most soulful I've ever worked with," Diddy explained. "His pocket reminds me of a James Brown pocket. So funky and soulful. When he plays I actually get goosebumps."

Arctic Monkeys Drummer band was renamed P Diddy

In the wake of his appearance with the new group Dirty Money superstar rapper on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross in June, P Diddy has revealed he is trying to preserve indie credibility by giving a new name for the Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders all he plays with the fledgling group.

In an interview with Contact Music, P Diddy explained the reasons for renaming Helders' Rufus Black. "" I do not want to fuck up the great thing Matt's got going on, "he said." He sits dirty money with my crew, every time he plays with us, it's Rufus Black. "
It is so strange that he and I are friends. Arctic Monkeys are so cool, you know? And people look at me like cool maybe as a person, but I do not know if musically they look at me like something cool underground rock. I did not even call him by his real name Matt. "
Later, P Diddy also hailed the unquestionable talent Helders, who has played a key role in the manufacture of Arctic Monkeys' bands the UK's most successful in recent years. "As a drummer, he is certainly one of the most moving I have ever worked with," he enthused. "His pocket reminds me of a pocket James Brown. So funky and soulful. When he plays, I made the goosebumps. "

Arctic Monkey's Alex Turner To Scroe Film

Alex Turner, is composing a movie score with James Ford one half of Simian Mobile Disco and producer for bands including Florence & the Machine, Peaches and Klaxons. It won't be the first time the two have collaborated Ford has produced albums for the Arctic Monkeys and Turner's side project The Last Shadow Puppets.
The film, called Submarine, is being helmed by Richard Ayoade best known as the bespectacled Maurice Moss from the tv series The IT Crowd, and is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Welsh writer Joe Dunthorne. The book has been compared to Martin Amis' The Rachel Papers and Salinger's Catcher In The Rye.
Turner's adept knack for slinging sharply observed, decisively British narratives and street poet lyrics ("oh the boy's a slag, the best you ever had") provides that mix of self deprecating sarcasm and tenderness that is perfectly suited to a coming of age tale for an overcast setting.

Arctic Monkeys: Desert set for Arctic blast

The Arctic Monkeys played Coachella in 2007 after “Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not” became the fastest-selling debut album in British history

Now, on the weekend of the 11th annual festival, the Arctic Monkeys are playing Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown.
The Sheffield, England quartet recorded much of their recent “Humbug” CD at the Rancho de la Luna studio in Joshua Tree with desert resident Josh Homme as producer, so the band thought it made sense to return to headline a gig with studio owner Dave Catching's Earthlings?
Lead singer-songwriter Alex Turner talked about it through a thick Sheffield accent in a recent telephone interview:
THE DESERT SUN: Did you have a chance to play Coachella or did you prefer to play at Pappy's?

TURNER: We wanted to play in Pappy's from the first time we walked through the door. I love Coachella festival. We had a great show there like two years ago, (but) it was a bit soon to do it again. Nothing against Coachella. I mean, Pappy's is only a couple hundred people. It's not going to be too damaging to that festival.
I know Josh took you there, but how did you get connected with Josh?
We met at festivals. He burst into a dressing room one day yelling, “Monkeys!” We took it from there.
So it was his entrance that caught your attention?
Yeah. I mean, we were longtime fans. Jamie (Cook) and I, when we were first learning to play guitar, we listened to (Homme's band) Queens (of the Stone Age) a lot. We played a show in Houston with them a couple years ago and I think we mentioned, “Yeah, we should do some tunes with Josh.” Then we forgot about it and went on our merry way. Then it came back up in conversation. We got in touch with the people upstairs and Josh and I spoke on the phone a lot. He said, “Why don't you come out for a couple weeks and we'll try it out.” So we all took a guitar each and drove to the desert and had a little adventure.
Was the environment much of an influence on the music you made?

Alex Turner has said there are presently no plans for him to make another album with The Last Shadow Puppets.

The Arctic Monkeys frontman recorded debut 'The Age Of the Understatement' with his side project band - which also features musician Miles Kane - in 2008, but although the pair hoping to enter the studio last year, Alex said it is now unlikely they will return at any point soon.

When asked if the band had plans to record by Absolute Radio, he said: "I wouldn't have thought so, no. Miles has just kind of completed his record, so that will sort of tie him up for a bit I think. Yeah, I don't think so.
